What makes us foreigners to stay and live in Ireland?
By Amme on Mar 17, 2008 in In English, Me In Ireland
Sometimes I wonder am I settled in Ireland and have I
acquired any habits? Or am I just here for the experience and try to forgive
my own country’s little faults that I can move back when I realize that
it is not any better to live here?
I am in a relationship with an Irishman and sometimes it is difficult to
find any other reason to stay. However Ireland offers lovely experiences
with their music, Celtic culture, Guinness and sights. I suppose this
country doesn’t seem to be so distance from everything and more middle-
Europe than Finland. You can’t say much about the weather, specially at
winter time!
Most of the people are friendly and easy to get to know. Then the
other ones are those who’ll shout at you in a hope that you will
understand better. They also have this idea that your home country
doesn’t have anything to offer and you live here only to make money that
you send home every month to your family, who lives in a shoe box! But
there you go, I don’t have to be part of their lives or they don’t have to be part of
mine. I’ve met people like that everywhere, not only in Ireland.
One of the best things in Ireland is to travel through the little
villages where the ‘How’s the craic?’ and the ‘Paddy’ life is still alive
in real Irish way. Bonus is if you find a place where there is some local
musician or band playing.
This is my view of Ireland at the moment. It might change, for better
or worse, in the future as I’ve been living here only few months.
I would like to hear your thoughts, experiences and reasons why you
are here! Till next time!

I’m at one with you. Especially, when you have mentioned about relations between Irish people and foreginers. I don’t feel good in this country - besides its great music, landscapes and nice bus drivers. The reason of this, is the fact that there is too many my compatriots. You know, I don’t feel as if I were abroad. Unfortunatelly, I often feel so ashamed of my nationality, because these people make a bad mark for our mother country. They are (I am not going to say, that all of them) churlish, riotous, stubborn and they think that they are kings of the world.
I am not a patriot, I am not proud of the history of my country (It’s hard to say for me, because I respect the eldery people, but…I think that my country has a hopeless history. The history of Poland is a history of martydom, history of dying ) and I hate the Polish mentallity.
Behaviour like that causes the tensions, not only between national inhabitans and foreginers, but also among our minority.
You know, what I mean - when I tell the Irish that I am from Poland, he/she nods his/her head and - despite that she/he is smiling in ‘friendly’ way, if I can say that - looks at me: ‘Oh, yes, another Polish…’
Some people can pass by and live as if it did not happen, as if ‘the problem’ didn’t exist - but I can’t.
I am bringing to my mind the situation, when I was talking with Irish. I told him, that I would be looking for the place, when I wouldn’t find so much Polish there. He grimmed and said:’You’ll have to go to Greenland’
OMG - what should I think? :////

V.V., i have to comment! you are not the only one who thinks that way. and you are not the only ‘normal’ polish. i’ve met a few who were really great - active, intelligent.. it’s the same with slovaks. i’m not particularly fond of slovaks in ireland but i know that it’s human nature to see the bad things first. those nice, clever slovaks (and there are many!) go unnoticed.. i’m sure any reasonable person should know better and not lump the whole nation together. it’s like we said that all young irish were drunkards (?) (:-)) and shallow.

i think ireland is a special country comparing to the other european countries.
probably you are going to say ,what makes me saying that?
by taking my little own experience and traveling in almost of the countries in europe.
and i have met a lot of people from many different culture and religion.
but exeptionaly the only place where i found my self realy not saw as foreigner and feeling my self very welcome as a liabore is in ireland.
iknow most of travelers who passed by ireland they had a bad first impression of irish people .by hearing a bad word or being insulted as go back to your countrie or f… black basterd .or any other strong words.
but lets analyse the life style and the culture in ireland as a foreigner eye!!!!
no body can denie the hard life of the irish
when they were colonised by the brith.
and no body can also denie the easy way to find a job in this country no matter your color or even your nationality.
lets compare those exemples:
dont you not thing that the irish knows very well what mesery means and what needs means ?
is it not for this reason they are very helpfull with foreingers ?
DOES ANY ONE CAN SAY I CANT PRACTICE MY RELIGION IN IRELAND ?
does any one can say i lost my way to go some where and not the first irish man helped me to find it……
does any one can say i havent got any fun when i went out (specialy with the lovely irish girls)
my conclusion of this point of view is no matter what the irish says on the night time.
we have just to realise that they are drunk and only drunk.
best regards
